Since 2012, the European Union has advocated a set of guiding principles for active aging and solidarity, which are based on three fundamental pillars: employment, social participation and independence. The areas of action reinforce the need for responses adjusted to the social realities and population needs of each country and aim to promote innovation, creativity, inclusion and social cohesion of all generations, especially the senior individual. The demographic evolution of Portuguese society, namely the increase of the elderly population, gives rise to new training needs included in the objectives of higher education institutions, namely, at postgraduate level. Specialized training aimed at all those working with the senior population should promote knowledge and skills adjusted to this new reality, involving professionals from different fields, such as health, education and sport, and to develop an integrated approach of preventive, treatment and rehabilitation. In particular, the promotion of an independent living in the elderly implies a multidisciplinary approach to the specificities of the normal aging process and its problems, reflected in the curriculum of this course.
