Cardiac auscultatory ability is an essential part of medical practice and a necessary adjunct to clinical examination. For this reason, medical schools and medical training programs in almost all medical specialties should encourage the revival of the "art of cardiac auscultation" and clinical diagnosis, which we believe it will improve efficacy. To be effective, it should be used the best resources available for listening education including video and audio-visual software, among other resources. The cardiac auscultation has also the virtue of saving money. With the rise of health costs, the cost-effectiveness of care is increasingly important. In fact, the modern doctor is called to compromise the fair distribution of finite resources as a principle of medical professionalism. The specialists in cardiac auscultation will be better able to distinguish patients who do not have a disease and therefore they will be able to provide more appropriate care by decreasing the irrational use of other complementary means of diagnosis. Proof of this is, for example, the recommendation of cardiac auscultation and the electrocardiogram in the screening of asymptomatic individuals.
The most recent research on auscultation teaching methods demonstrates that learning depends on the repetition of this technique. Thus a course in this area may occur in an e-learning system and be focused on self-study guided by a dedicated platform. It is suggested hundreds of repetitions to improve this skill.
The objectives are defined in accordance with the mission of the University of Porto in that they point to the creation of scientific knowledge and the development of an university-level training strongly anchored to research as well as the application of knowledge and skills in order to promote the social and economic valorisation of knowledge and the progress of the communities in which it operates.
