FMUP is an institution for creating, disseminating and applying knowledge in the field of Medicine, other Health Sciences and Human Biology, with the objective of scientific, technological, and ethical training of medical doctors and other health professionals. FMUP also contributes to health improvements on the general population as a whole.

The quality of teaching, the vibrant scientific activity, and its assistential practice are key-points of the life and name of this institution which has been granted with the preference of the portuguese students that intend to study Medicine.


History

Officially created in 1911, FMUP descends from the Royal School of Surgery of Porto, created in 1825 by the portuguese king John the 6th.


Courses

FMUP lectures the Integrated Masters in Medicine course and takes part in the teaching of the courses of Dental Medicine and Nutrition Sciences of the University of Porto. Coordinator of 13 doctoral programmes, FMUP also coordinates eight masters and about 20 post-graduate courses (the latter with no degree granted).


Science

FMUP is leader in Portugal as regards scientific production, with 532 international indexed articles published in 2014.


People

This institution hosts three thousand students at different levels, as well as a highly qualified teaching staff (about 50% of which have a doctoral degree) and non-teaching staff personnel that are young and proactive (FMUP has about 500 staff in total).


Facilities

FMUP shares its facilities with the largest hospital in the north of Portugal: São João Hospital. A new facility complex has a total area of 23000 square-metres, having three buildings, a main auditorium, two smallers ones, a Library with about 1000 square-metres, and 40 lecture rooms and laboratories. The three buildings are inter-connected with the main FMUP building and São João Hospital by a tunnel.
